The Bugaboo Story
Bugaboo is the brainchild of Dutch Designer Max Barenburg and his physician brother-in-law, Eduard Zanen. Together, they wanted to invent a stroller that was functional and fashionable, could be used in the city and the country, and that was appealing to fathers and mothers alike.
Their answer was the Bugaboo Frog. Introduced in Holland in 1999, and named for its frog like suspension wheels that 'jump' over obstacles in their path, the Frog became the 'it' stroller of celebrities and parents who wanted this elite stroller for their babies.
After years of customer feedback and further testing and development on the Bugaboo Frog, the pair realized that parents wanted more options to meet their different needs. In September of 2005, the Barenburg and Zanen introduced to the world the Bugaboo Cameleon, Bugaboo Gecko, and the Bugaboo By strollers to offer customers more choices.
With 32 different color options, the Bugaboo Cameleon is appropriately named after the versatile reptile, the Cameleon. Bugaboo's most recent offering, the Bugaboo Bee, entered the market in August of 2007, and offers a light and nimble travel option for parents. The Bugaboo Bee fills the gap left by the Bugaboo Gecko's discontinuation.
The next step for Bugaboo was to form an alliance with different artists in order to push the boundaries of stroller design. And so was born the new line, Bugaboo By. Bugaboo By was a partnership between world renowned Bugaboo and the Dutch Fashion Foundation. The joint venture came out of the high fashion sense already in place within the Bugaboo line and the desire to expand upon the company's already elite branding.
First in the series was a concept from Dutch artist Bas Kosters, who was given the creative freedom to explore a new medium in dreaming up his very own stroller. The final product maintained the functionality and the style of the original Bugaboo line while adding a new dimension with Kosters' personal, unique, and elite styling. The appeal of the Bugaboo by Bas Kosters was not only in the high quality artisan appeal but also in the rarity of the edition; only 1,000 were created and disseminated internationally.
