Our Review of the Bugaboo Frog stroller

JPMA Certified

The one that started it all. The Bugaboo Frog Stroller was the first Bugaboo to hit the market. Introduced in 1999, the world had never seen such a high-tech or high quality baby stroller. Celebrities helped make the Bugaboo Frog even more famous, while thousands of people scrambled to make one of these versatile strollers their very own. Named for its unique frog-like horizontal and vertical suspension that jumps over obstacles in its path, the Bugaboo Frog also offers a variety of features and configurations to help make any outing more comfortable for both baby and parent.

The Bugaboo Frog's design starts with a strong, yet lightweight aluminum chassis. A reversible three-position seat, for children up to 40 pounds, and material to convert the seat to a bassinet for newborns to six months old, or up to 19 pounds, is included and can be attached to the base. For safety, a five-point safety harness system is built into the seat. Note: Do not use the bassinet as a car seat. For added convenience, with special car seat connectors, the Graco SnugRide, or Peg Perego Primo Viaggio infant car seats can also be attached directly to the Bugaboo Frog's base.

Two larger, inflatable wheels provide stability, while two smaller swiveling wheels offer maximum maneuverability for city or country strolling. You can flip the handlebar to lead with the larger wheels on bumpy paths or through fresh snow, or, use the Bugaboo Frog's two-wheel position to push or pull your Bugaboo Frog across the sand at the beach.

Designed to be totally portable, the Bugaboo Frog folds easily to store in your vehicle's trunk or take on an airplane. (Please Note: The seat of the Bugaboo Frog MUST be removed before folding. And proper folding of all Bugaboo strollers is a multi-step process.)

After hundreds of customer's feedback, Bugaboo realized that different parents were looking for different types of features for their baby strollers. So, Bugaboo introduced the Bugaboo Cameleon and the Bugaboo Bee.

Great looking.... but not much to back it up

I love buying nice things. Generally, I rest assured knowing I paid top dollar for a quality product and minimal hassle should something arise. Unfortunately, in the case of Bugaboo - the price tag seems to be not much more than one's dues for the status symbol. **Pros: Great looking stroller; Smooth ride; The bassinet feature was used frequently as a newborn; I like the brake system - very convenient as opposed to one at the foot of a stroller. **Cons: Bulky - I drive an H3 and it takes up the entire cargo area; 2 piece fold is not convenient if you're holding a baby. I end up putting my child in a hot car while I take apart this stroller; The rear wheels need additional air every week or so. This stroller has never been outside of a mall so what on earth could have damaged the tires. My plan was to use the wheeled board for a 2nd child but much to my dismay it extends awkwardly far beyond the stroller handle so that one must push the stroller from the side if you want to use it - so it appears I'll be purchasing a new stroller for baby number two after all; The Frog does not maneuver as well as a Maclaren in shopping stores, I am constantly catching on racks/etc; No cup holder..... I expect more from a company selling 'luxury' baby products. I am sad to say that this was a purchase I regret and am already looking at selling my Frog despite the fact my daughter is only 7 months old. (This is coming from someone who spent $800 on nursery bedding and absolutely love them. This isn't a buyer's remorse issue with our Frog, this is a Quality & Service vs. Price Tag issue.)

i've purchased this stroller for my second child hoping that it would be one and only we ll ever need. however, it has some improvements to be made. the handlebar is slightly wobbly. the basket is useless. you have to use the same frame for the bassinete and the seat- so you can't have both at the same time. traveling by plane with it requires an extra suitcase just for the stroller. the good side of it is that it is easy to steer, lightweight and cute. an eye catcher.

As good as my imagination!

I'll start by saying that our baby is still on the way, so I can't review whether he likes it or hates it. However, I absolutely love it so far. The package came very quickly (2 days), and although it was a little difficult to put together, I'm fairly sure it was user error and not the stroller's fault! It is a great size, and I can see that I could maneuver through aisles at the store easily. I was worried that the wheels would stick out too far on the sides to make this possible, but they don't. It is also very easy to switch from the bassinet to the seat and to rotate and recline the seat. It can be done with the push of a button. The fabric is thick and I can see that it will last through many washings. I was also worried about the underseat basket looking small in the pictures, but it is a great size. I also think that the tires seem like they'd take a beating...nothing flimsy about them. I researched strollers until I was ready to scream, and I'm positive I made the right decision with this one. It was expensive, but it wasn't an impulse buy. By the time I'd decided that this was the right one, I'd saved the money. On another note, I can't imagine why anyone would need the Chameleon instead of the Frog. There's nothing the Frog doesn't do! The only real difference seemed to be the color choices, but I really like the bright red Frog. I'd buy it all over again!

Some good, some bad

I'm actually a nanny, so I did not purchase this stroller. However, I have used many (many) strollers in the past with previous charges. This one has some really amazing points - it is comparably light weight (I've carried it, including baby, up several flights of stairs with no problems), great steering (one handed is a breeze), and has some convenient accessories (love the umbrella!). However, no snack tray!!! This is a nightmare. And a handle tray for phone/keys/etc would have been a great addition. Having used it Monday-Friday every week for the past 8 months,I can vouch that it is a sturdy, quality product. However, given the price and other, more convenient options available, I have to say, I would not likely buy this one for myself.

Bugaboo Frog - A lifesaver, LITERALLY!

Reviewer: Joyce R. , Westfield, NJ Date: October 02, 2008
I am writing to you to tell you a story that you should either feel free to use as marketing or just know you made a very significant difference in one family's life. My 3 year daughter was recently hit by a very reckless driver while being strolled in the Bugaboo Frog which she was in since she was born. She was comfortably asleep, which probably helped and my wonderful smart nanny had her completely strapped in even though she was 3 and probably didn't "need" to be. I am told by people who witnessed the accident that it flipped about 3 times and landed on it's side. Obviously my daughter was awoken and scared, but conscious. My nanny was obviously distraught, but also ok. The police at the scene comforted them both and called me immediately at work. The police officer in charge at the scene said to me, "I always made fun of all those woman who bought these expensive $800 strollers, but I stand corrected. Your daughter was absolutely spared any major injuries because of this thing." Thankfully my daughter Heidi had a few scratches, but overall completely fine. There is nothing like getting that phone call for any parent and my husband and I got to the hospital as fast as possible. It was terrible. Additionally, I was about 8 1/2 months pregnant with our second daughter who now rides comfortably in the same stroller. Besides a little cut in the rubber on the frame and a very faded hood it serves us just fine. I feel good knowing she too is as safe as any child could be in this crazy world we live in. I spent over 15 years living in an urban setting (NYC/Hoboken, NJ) and 3 months after I move to suburban Westfield, NJ this happens. You never do know, but thank you from our family for making such a great product.

An amazing piece, my daughter loves it. It's expensive but you'll have what you all wanted. Usable until your child reaches 4 years old. Fabric does'nt fade,it will look new as long as you have it. What's missing is the car seat adaptor, as a suggestion, Bugaboo should include adaptors if you want to go with graco, peg or maxi cosi but not an option. Cup holder should be included too. But above all I really like it and I'm planning to get the navy blue color for the future baby boy. Thanks Bugaboo.

Bugaboo Frog -Versatility & smoothness are a dream

Reviewer: Liz Gogo , Mountain View, CA Date: August 16, 2008
I am dubbed "the stroller queen" (by my husband), as I have owned more than my fair share of strollers. With baby #2, my obsession has gotten worse. What I have found now, after purchasing 8 different strollers (ranging from umbrella to jogger), is that there is no ONE perfect stroller. That said, my Bugaboo Frog stroller comes pretty close. The only reason I give it a 4 instead of 5 stars is that I can't fold it down by myself while holding a baby. Otherwise, it is great, even for the price. I actually prefer the Bugaboo Frog for jogging over the Baby Jogger II my first baby rolled in. I'm a fairly serious runner and I researched it well for #1. I was happy with my choice until we decided to try biking as a family. Adding a bike trailer to our townhouse garage put us over the top to busting at the seams. At this point, I switched the Baby Jogger to a Chariot Cougar. Another fantastic and versatile stroller. But still not my favorite for running. My Bugaboo Frog is smooth and more comfortable for my baby than either other jogging stroller because of the bassinet option and the fully reclining seat option. I didn't want to wait the 6 months to put baby #2 in a jogging stroller. For me, combining my runs with baby's naptime are essential while #1 is at preschool. The Frog absorbs the bumps well enough, moves smoothly over the sidewalks and driveways and has a more comfortable handle bar than either the Baby Jogger or the Chariot. I'm 5'1", so maybe that makes the difference. When I researched with #1, the conclusion of most runners was that a fixed front wheel was best. My Baby Jogger always developed a slight pull to the right, so I had to lift and recorrect constantly. I think the fact that the Bugaboo's two front wheels swivel make it much easier to steer. One front swivel would definitely be a problem, but two make turns a dream. The shocks absorb the bumps and my baby sleeps peacefully (which is amazing because #2 is NOT the sleeper #1 was!). When I first ran with baby padded snuggly in the bassinet, I did feel a little silly, as running while pushing a pram is not the athletic look I am used to, but who cares if it works?! Sleeping baby and running mama = happy household. And that makes hubby happy, even after the price. And, he adds, "great re-sale value".

Bugaboo Frog - 2 Yrs Later, We STILL Love It!

Reviewer: Anonymous , Maryland Date: July 10, 2008
Absolutely LOVE the Bugaboo Frog stroller. If you do a lot of errand running on foot, this stroller is a lifesaver. I can't imagine shoving over cracked sidewalks, overgrown paths, and crumbly asphalt, with anything else. At the beach, we convert into the admittedly odd 2-wheeled mode, and pull our daughter over the sand with ease. The basket is spacious and sturdy. I've managed to fit a gallon milk jug in there on a grocery run! We've used our Bugaboo Frog for almost 2 and a half years, and it's held up remarkably well despite not-so-gentle treatment. The cover comes off easily and can be thrown in the washer, something that can't be said for the stoller my mother bought, which is gross with food stains and dirt. As some other reviewers have said, this stroller also serves double duty as a bassinet bed when your child is a newborn. The only thing keeping this review from being 5 stars, is the lack of an easy way to lash the two halves of the stroller together when it's folded. This stroller folds into two pieces: the frame, and the seat/bassinet. I don't mind having the two pieces as opposed to one. Having two pieces makes it easier to arrange the stroller in cramped car trunks. The only problem is that having the two pieces makes it almost impossible to carry this stroller folded, if you're alone and also have a baby or small child with you. I wish they had come up with some kind of clasp or strap. It would still be awkward, but as it is, the one thing I can't do with our Bugaboo is take it on a bus or train without another adult to lend a hand. All in all, that is a small concern with what has otherwise been a fantastic stroller, and worth every single penny of its purchase price.
